Avery felt eyes on her. She turned from her group of friends and scanned the room. Maybe she was simply wishing Ryse would show up. But something in the back of her mind told her she was being watched. It wasn’t the first time she’d felt it this week.

“C’mon baby girl, let’s go dance one more time before they shut the place down.” Jerry grinned and held out a hand. Though her feet were killing her, Avery sighed and let him pull her from her chair.

“Take it easy on me, darlin,’” she begged. “These boots were made for walkin,’ not dancin.’”

Jerry chuckled and gently put his arm around her. “Okay, I’ll have mercy on your feet.” They fell into a comfortable rhythm. “You having fun? Been watching the door all night.”

She didn’t want to upset Jerry, but he was dead on. They only had about an hour left and still no Ryse.

Determined not to be the schmuck waiting up all night again, she focused on Jerry. “I’m having a great time. You know I love going out like this. We always have so much fun.”

“Hell yeah we do.” He smiled and leaned his cheek on her forehead. “Listen, I wanted to talk to you about something. I don’t if now’s the right time though.”

“Go for it. I’m half buzzed,” Avery joked.

“That doesn’t help, smart ass,” he teased. “I just wanted you to know that I’m worried about you.”

Avery jerked her head back. “Me? Why?”

He gave a one-shouldered shrug; his cheeks took on a blush. “Well, you know, Frank and I, we do talk about . . . stuff. And I know you haven’t been dating or anything. I flirt—”

“With everyone.”

“—but it’s different with you, baby girl. I, um, I actually mean it with you.”

Avery stared up at his sweet face. What the hell did she say to that? And why did Jerry have to make such a confession the day she and Ryse were—doing whatever she and Ryse were doing? If he stood her up again, they wouldn’t be doing shit. But if he showed up at her house later, she wouldn’t deny him whatever he wanted. Which made her current situation awkward.

“Jerry, I have a confession. You know I love you like a brother, I do. And heaven knows I wouldn’t take our friendship for granted. But there’s nothing else there.”

He nodded, his blush deepened, his eyes averted. “Yeah, I thought that’s how it was. And that’s okay, really. I hoped over time you and I could—”

“I’ve met someone, Jerry.”

That got his attention. Hurt blossomed on his face. “How? Who? Do I know him?”

“It’s Brenden’s friend, the guy that was in the cafe with him yesterday. You should know him, he’s a bounty hunter the station called in for a case.”

Jerry’s expression morphed from a concerned brother to a raging bull. His eyes widened and his nostrils flared.

Did he just snarl at me?

“The station would never call in a bounty hunter to help with a case, Avery. We have detectives for investigations.
